Description

The PRISM project aims to counter anti-Muslim hatred in Europe by fundamentally transforming how Muslims and Islam are represented in the media. Bias, stereotypes, and misinformation in news coverage frequently marginalize Muslim communities, reinforcing social divides. PRISM addresses this by fostering direct, constructive collaboration between journalists, civil society organizations (CSOs), and Muslim communities. The project equips media professionals with ethical reporting standards and simultaneously empowers Muslim individuals to confidently engage in public communication, ultimately promoting accurate, inclusive, and fair media narratives.

Our Role at Citizens in Power (CIP)

As a core partner in the PRISM consortium, Citizens in Power leads critical transnational activities while driving local impact in Cyprus:

  • Quality Assurance & Ethics Leadership: CIP leads the project’s Quality Assurance and Monitoring Framework and serves as the Gender Equality and Diversity Officer (GEDO), ensuring all project activities across Europe strictly uphold ethical, non-discriminatory, and gender-inclusive standards.
  • Local Network Building: We are co-establishing the PRISM Network in Cyprus, creating a sustainable, collaborative platform for local journalists, CSOs, and Muslim representatives.
  • Training & Empowerment: In collaboration with the Institute for Mass Media (IMME), CIP co-hosts capacity-building and myth-busting workshops. We also organize specific empowerment workshops designed to enhance the public speaking and media engagement skills of Muslim participants.
  • Shaping the Narrative: CIP actively contributes to the “Positive Story Stream,” adapting authentic, human-centered stories into journalist-friendly formats for publication every two months.
  • Policy & Advocacy: We participate in co-creating national policy briefs, consolidating lessons learned, and implementing the PRISM awareness campaign to advocate for systemic media accountability.

Long-Term Impact

To ensure the project’s lasting legacy, CIP is committed to utilizing our regular Erasmus+ and CERV projects focused on media literacy to co-fund and embed future PRISM-related activities into broader social inclusion curricula.
