Scientix: The Community for Science Education in Europe 

A European community for STEM education practice 

Citizens in Power has joined Scientix®, the community for science education in Europe. Scientix began at the end of 2009 as an initiative of the European Commission and is coordinated by European Schoolnet, the Brussels-based network of ministries of education. It promotes and supports Europe-wide collaboration among STEM teachers, education researchers, policymakers and other STEM education professionals.  

The platform’s central function is aggregation with quality control. Members can browse the Scientix resources repository, join European STEM education projects via the matching tool, take part in national and European workshops and professional development courses, download conference materials, participate in online training, webinars and communities of practice, and identify collaborating teachers and schools through the public profiles directory. Scientix Ambassadors, who form the Teacher Panel, promote the community to science and mathematics teachers across Europe. A translation-on-demand service allows resources to be made available in additional European languages — directly relevant for reaching Greek-speaking educators in Cyprus. European Schoolnet organises the community’s work around five strategic areas, including integrated STEM education, emerging technologies, and the contextualisation of STEM in environmental sustainability and in culture and society.  

 

Why this collaboration matters 

 

STEM and STEAM education in Cyprus faces a set of structural constraints recognisable across small member states: a limited national pool of subject-specialist teacher trainers, few opportunities for educators to observe validated practice in comparable systems, and a persistent gap between the pace of curriculum reform and the pace of technological change, particularly in relation to artificial intelligence, data literacy and computational thinking. Uptake of STEM pathways among girls and among learners in rural and peripheral communities remains uneven.  

 

For CIP, the difficulty is rarely the absence of good material. It is the absence of a reliable filter and a route to the classroom. Membership gives us continuous access to STEM resources already developed and tested within European projects, a peer community large enough to indicate which approaches transfer well and which do not, and an established dissemination channel through which our own outputs reach practitioners far beyond the partners of any single project. For an organisation whose portfolio depends on the quality and durability of educational outputs, this is a practical instrument rather than a symbolic affiliation. 

 

What CIP brings to the community 

CIP joins Scientix with sustained experience in the design, piloting and validation of educational materials through European cooperation projects, delivered with schools, VET providers, higher education institutions and adult learners in Cyprus. Specifically, we contribute: 

  • STEAM and digital learning outputs developed and tested in Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe projects, including curricula, lesson plans, modules, virtual learning laboratories and gamified learning tools. 
  • AI and emerging-technology pedagogy, an area in which teacher-facing material remains scarce and where CIP is actively developing content for school, VET and adult education audiences. 
  • Inclusive education practice, including approaches designed for learners with fewer opportunities, learners in rural and peripheral communities, and mixed-ability groups. 
  • Bilingual dissemination capacity, allowing selected resources to be made available in Greek as well as English and reaching an educator community that European repositories reach unevenly. 
  • Established reach into the Cypriot education system, through cooperation with schools, VET centres, higher education institutions and public authorities,  

How CIP will engage 

Our participation is intended to be operational rather than nominal. CIP will: 

 

  • Publish project outputs in the Scientix resource repository, submitting materials from our STEAM, digital and AI education projects with the metadata and documentation required for reuse by third parties. 
  • Take part in Scientix professional development, using webinars, online courses and Ambassador-led sessions to keep our education staff current on European STEM pedagogy and to feed that knowledge into ongoing project design. 
  • Contribute to the STEM Discovery Campaign by registering activities delivered in Cyprus and linking them to our project-based events and multiplier activities. 
  • Participate in Scientix conferences and community events, presenting evidence from Cypriot pilots and identifying prospective partners for future consortia. 
  • Use the project matching tool to identify European partners whose STEM priorities align with ours. 

Policy alignment 

This collaboration supports the objectives of the European Education Area and the Digital Education Action Plan 2021–2027, in particular its priorities on fostering a high-performing digital education ecosystem and enhancing digital skills and competences for the digital transformation. At project level, it aligns with the Erasmus+ horizontal priorities on digital transformation and on inclusion and diversity, and with the reference frameworks CIP applies across its educational design work, including DigComp and DigCompEdu.
