PIVOT: Promoting Inclusion through Wordless Texts in Primary Education
Project Summary:
The PIVOT project aims to enhance inclusive education practices in primary schools across Europe by using wordless texts to foster students’ active participation and oral language development. This innovative approach is designed to benefit students with diverse learning needs, including those with disabilities, socio-economic disadvantages, and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The project involves a multi-phased development, implementation, and evaluation of inclusive instructional practices, ensuring sustainability and transferability beyond the project’s lifespan.
Main Objectives:
- Develop a theoretical framework on effective inclusive teaching practices using wordless texts.
- Conduct a needs analysis to assess teachers’ experiences and knowledge regarding wordless texts in inclusive classrooms.
- Design, pilot, and implement an educational program that trains teachers in inclusive pedagogies.
- Develop an assessment pack to evaluate the impact of the PIVOT educational program on student participation and language skills.
- Create a comprehensive program implementation guide and toolkit for long-term use.
Key Outputs and Deliverables:
Work Package 2: Theoretical Development and Needs Analysis
- Report on Theoretical Framework: A research synthesis on the impact of wordless texts in inclusive education.
- Needs Analysis Report: Findings from a cross-country teacher survey on existing practices and requirements for inclusive teaching.
- Development of a Teacher Survey Tool: A structured questionnaire designed to gather insights into teachers’ experiences and perspectives.
Work Package 3: Development and Implementation of the PIVOT Educational Programme
- Wordless Texts Collection: A curated selection of picture books and visual narratives focused on inclusion and diversity.
- Lesson Plans: Eight fully developed lesson plans for use in primary schools, piloted and refined based on teacher feedback.
- Teacher Professional Development Program: Training materials designed to equip educators with inclusive teaching strategies.
- Train-the-Trainers Initiative: Capacity-building activities to ensure the sustainability and widespread adoption of the PIVOT approach.
- Implementation Guide: A structured document detailing best practices for implementing PIVOT lesson plans in different educational contexts.
Work Package 4: Development and Implementation of the PIVOT Assessment Pack
- Student Participation and Language Development Assessments: Pre- and post-test tools to measure student progress.
- Social Acceptability Survey: A feedback mechanism involving students, teachers, and families to assess program reception.
- Implementation Integrity Tool: Guidelines and monitoring instruments to ensure program fidelity across partner schools.
- Comprehensive Assessment Pack Guide: A toolkit to support the continued use of PIVOT assessment methods post-project.
