Women with disabilities, their families, and their key practitioners may find it difficult to make informed decisions about motherhood. There are still many prejudices related to the world of disability, in particular when we talk about relationships, sexual needs or parenthood of women with disabilities. The MoMs Project aims to spread awareness of motherhood for women with disabilities among professionals and people with disabilities themselves. The project promotes the competencies/skills of the two groups to fill the communication and knowledge gap at the national and European levels. Furthermore, the project will:
- support the inclusion of women with disabilities in all matters related to the right of marriage, family, parenthood and relationships;
- create upskilling pathways, improving accessibility and increasing take-up of adult education: one of the goals of this project is to produce free contents available on a platform accessible for all, translated in partners’ national languages and Sign Languages, about parenthood for people with disabilities;
- contribute to public debate and political policies that address the fact that people with disabilities are individuals with sexual sensations and familiar needs.
Target Groups
Direct target groups are:
– women/girls with disabilities that have any question or doubt regarding pregnancy and family construction: their rights, their desires, their emotions and feelings regarding these topics.
– Educators that deal with people with disabilities and need support in helping adult women with disabilities in finding answers related to sexuality and pregnancy.
– Healthcare professionals and psychologists that may meet in their daily work women with disabilities that need to face the topic of pregnancy, relationship and family. In particular, healthcare professionals sometimes are not trained to welcome pregnant women with disabilities: they don’t know how to physically help them or how to talk properly.
Indirect target groups are:
– mothers with disabilities: women with disabilities that already have children and that can be a good example and tell their personal experiences.
– families, parents especially, of women with disabilities that want to be informed about how they can be a right support, what are the services that can help them and how can a woman with disabilities be a mother.
– young university students that are studying in education, psychology and medicine.
– social organizations that daily collaborate with the partners involved in the project. All of them will benefit from the definition of a framework of competences and learning outcomes for the awareness of womens and mothers with disabilities
